OUTSTANDING EVENTS OF WORLD WAR II


1939

Sept. 1 – Germany invaded Poland.

Sept. 3 – Britain and France declared war on Germany

Sept. 10 – Canada declared war on Germany

Sept. 28 – Germany and Russia partitioned Poland.

Oct. 28 – Italy invaded Greece

Nov. 30 – Russia troops invaded Finland.

Dec. 13 – Three British cruisers defeat German pocket battleship Graf Spee, which was later scuttled by its crew.

1940

April 9 – Germany invaded Norway and Denmark

April 15 – British and French troops landed in Norway.

May 2 – British evacuated southern Norway.

May 10 – Germany invaded Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg and France.

May 10 – Churchill becomes prime minister.

May 30 – British evacuated Dunkerque [sic.]

June 10 – Canada declared war on Italy after Italy declared war on Britain and France.

June 22 – German-French armistice agreement signed.

Aug 15 – Germany attacked Britain with 1,000 planes.

Sept. 15 – R.A.F. repelled German air blitz of Britain, destroying at least 185 planes in one day’s operations.

Oct. 18 – Britain announced R.A.F. foiled German attempt to invade Britain Sept. 16.

Dec. 9 – British opened first great North African offensive which annihilated Italy army.

Dec. 29 – Luftwaffe staged great ‘fire’ raid on Lond.

1941

January – U.S. introduced lend-lease program

March 10 – British troops embarked from Alexandria for Greece.

April 6 – Germany attached Yugoslavia and Greece.

May 26 – Germans attacked Crete in first airborne action.

May 27 – German super-battleship Bismarck sunk three days after she sank British battle cruiser Hood.

May 31 – British evacuated Crete.

June 22 – Germany, Italy and Romania declared war on Russia.

July 7 – U.S. naval forces landed in Iceland.

July 12 – Britain and Russia signed agreement for joint action against Germany.

Dec 11 – Germany and Italy declared war on United States.

1942

Jan. 27 – First American troops arrived in Northern Ireland.

May 30 – More than 1,000 Canadians participated in first 1,000 plane raid on Cologne.

July 1 – Germans captured Sevastopol.

Aug 19 – Canadians led attach on Dieppe.

Oct 23 – British opened Battle of El Alamein, turning point in North Africa.

Nov. 7 – U.S. troops landed in North Africa.

Nov. 11 – Germand occupied all France.

1943

Jan. 18 – Seventeen-month siege of Leningrad broken.

May 13 – All organized Axis resistance ends in North Africa.

July 10 – Canadian, British, American troops invaded Sicily.

July 15 – Russians opened gigantic summer-winter offensive that was to continue until Romania penetrated.

Aug 17 – Conquest of Sicily completed.

Sept. 3 – Canadians landed on Italian mainland.

Sept. 8 – Italy surrendered unconditionally.

Sept. 21 – Churchill promised invasion of Europe from the west.

Dec. 24 – D.D. Eisenhower appointed to direct Allied invasion of Europe from the west.


1944

April 3 – Russians invaded Romania.

April 25 – Pre-invasion bombing of Nazi Europe in full swing.

May 11 – Allied offensive in Italy launched.

June 4 – Allied captured Rome.

June 6 – Allies began invasion of western Europe.

June 23 – Russians began great 1944 summer offensive.

Aug 25 – Paris is liberated.

Sept 11 – Allies reach German border.

Dec. 17 – Nazis open counterattacks.

1945

Jan. 12 – Nazis counterattack broken.

Feb. 4-12 – Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin hold victory conference at Yalta.

March 7 – Allied troops break through Rhine line.

April 12 – President Roosevelt dies.
