Sept. 28 – Germany and Russia partitioned Poland.
Oct. 28 – Italy invaded Greece
Nov. 30 – Russia troops invaded Finland.
Dec. 13 – Three British cruisers defeat German pocket battleship Graf Spee, which was later scuttled by its crew.
1940
April 9 – Germany invaded Norway and Denmark
April 15 – British and French troops landed in Norway.
May 2 – British evacuated southern Norway.
May 10 – Germany invaded Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg and France.
May 10 – Churchill becomes prime minister.
May 30 – British evacuated Dunkerque [sic.]
June 10 – Canada declared war on Italy after Italy declared war on Britain and France.

March 10 – British troops embarked from Alexandria for Greece.

May 26 – Germans attacked Crete in first airborne action.
May 27 – German super-battleship Bismarck sunk three days after she sank British battle cruiser Hood.
May 31 – British evacuated Crete.
June 22 – Germany, Italy and Romania declared war on Russia.
July 7 – U.S. naval forces landed in Iceland.
July 12 – Britain and Russia signed agreement for joint action against Germany.
Dec 11 – Germany and Italy declared war on United States.
1942
